Kapama Private Game Reserve

Kapama Private Game Reserve, with its portfolio of luxurious safari lodges, occupies a vast area between the northern Drakensberg mountains and the Greater Kruger National Park and is the largest single-owned game reserve in the region. The adjacent Eastgate airport (Hoedspruit) is perfectly situated to receive guests flying in from either Johannesburg or Capetown, and Kapama includes free transfers in open safari vehicles directly to any of the four lodges on Kapama namely River Lodge, Buffalo Camp, Karula and Southern Camp.

South Africa’s Limpopo province in which Kapama is situated is renowned for its wildlife and includes areas such as the well known Kruger National Park. Our reserve with its 13000 hectares of pristine wilderness shares a large number of biomes with the Kruger Park and therefore are able to host all animals including the Big 5: Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Buffalo and Rhinoceros, to name but a few of the approximately 42 different mammal species calling Kapama home. Approximately 350 bird species and a myriad of smaller species can also be seen in their natural environment. Game drives are conducted twice daily with expert guides and trackers who will eagerly share their bush experiences and knowledge with you whilst driving through some of the most beautiful savannah woodlands, grassland and riverine bush which makes up the Kapama Game Reserve.

KAPAMA RIVER LODGE
Is a luxury safari lodge situated within the Kapama Game Reserve, and presents the perfect blend between luxurious safari accommodation and a very generous bed capacity of 64 bedrooms. The northern Drakensberg mountain range provides a majestic backdrop to this, the largest lodge in the Greater Kruger National Park region. Although large, it is stylishly furnished and beautifully positioned along a dry riverbed. The ambience of nature is captured perfectly and guests fall in love with River Lodge the moment they arrive.
Each spacious room at Kapama River Lodge features a full en-suite bathroom and patio with uninterrupted views into the leafy-green game reserve. The central guest entertainment areas include a large rim-flow swimming pool with sun umbrellas and recliners for those lazy afternoons. The long L-shaped lounge and bar under a double-volume thatch, curves around the pool and on either side is a huge double-sided fireplace creating a wondrous open-plan yet cozy atmosphere.
The Rhino Boma dining area with tables tastefully arranged under a low thatch in a horseshoe shape has a central open area where a roaring fire gives a brilliant glow to evening meals. Buffet-style meals introduce Pan African flavors and dishes using fresh local ingredients and specialty dishes featuring venison like Kudu and Impala.

KAPAMA BUFFALO CAMP
Is reminiscent of a traditional African safari camp and offers a unique and intimate experience in the African bush. It is ideal for discovering big game Africa in true safari tented style without compromising on comfort.
Ten luxury newly built canvas tents, each sleeping two, are set on wooden decks built on stilts over a steep-sided riverbank. Wooden walkways interconnect the rooms, which are all in the upper reaches of tall riverine trees. The river below rarely flows and antelopes are seen daily walking along the sandy riverbed. Each tented room has all the usual comforts of electricity, en-suite bathroom, safe, writing table, wardrobe, low impact climate control, mini-bar and tea/coffee facilities.
The communal areas of Buffalo Camp are on the riverbank, where gardens of succulent aloes and euphorbia are tended around the thatched bar, dining room, pool terrace and campfire. But the thick African bush is just a glance away, inhabited by animals like lion, hyena and jackal whose calls can be heard in the dead of night. Lanterns, rather than electric lights, glow at night under the trees, creating a special intimate ambience particular to Buffalo Camp.
With a maximum of 20 guests at Buffalo Camp, special attention is paid to personal service and the staff become like friends. Kapama Buffalo Camp is a truly authentic way to experience the African bush.

KAPAMA SOUTHERN CAMP
Is the proud new addition to the Kapama Game Reserve family and is situated on the southern most section of the Kapama Private Game Reserve. It offers luxury safari accommodation, warm hospitality and friendly service in a tranquil setting which will satisfy even the most discerning nature lovers’ taste.
Relax in the lounge with a good book or just sit back and indulge in the breathtaking beauty of mother nature in all her splendour. Alternatively you can lazily lounge around the magnificent pool and deck area and stare into the vast African yonder, hopefully spotting some of the many animals that often pass in close proximity. If the African sun becomes too much to endure, a dip in the refreshing swimming pool will bring immediate relief, and the friendly barman will be on hand to spoil you with a tantalising cocktail.
Breakfast and lunches are normally served in the dining room with open sides, so you will always have nature just a few meters away while enjoying tasteful culinary creations from qualified chefs . Dinner is served in the traditional outside Boma, again with nature as the backdrop and a starlit sky overhead creating the perfect setting.
Southern Camp also boasts a fully equipped wine cellar.
Southern Camp offers 10 standard rooms. These include 4 family rooms catering for a maximum of two children under 12 per family room. All the standard rooms are equipped with an en-suite bathroom with shower only. Safe boxes and Coffee & Tea making facilities are standard in all rooms. KAPAMA KARULA
Is set on the banks of the perennial Klaserie River and is one of Kapama’s most secluded and prestigious safari camps – Karula means “place of peace” in the native tongue, and soon after your arrival you will know exactly why this name is just so perfect for this magnificent luxury safari camp. Peace is but one of the many emotions that will encompass your soul as you look at the serene waterway meandering gently past your doorstep and the age old saying “water is life” will begin to have a whole new meaning for you.
The open plan lounge and bar area, with floor to ceiling glass doors illustrates the perfect balance with elegant light colors. This modern building with its whitewashed wooden structure, skylights and open air bar, creates a cozy feel to the lounge and makes it a day time favorite to enjoy a drink or just sit back and enjoy the sights Karula has to offer. The contemporary yet African feel to the camp will satisfy and exceed the expectations of even the most discerning connoisseurs. The outside wooden deck overlooking the Klaserie river gives you the opportunity to enjoy the tranquil atmosphere and magnificent vistas the camp has to offer.
The library and media room boasts some of the best audio visual equipment but doubles as a library where you can read a good book in a breathtaking environment, or just take in nature’s views through the massive sliding windows. Keep in touch with family and loved ones at one of the two dedicated guest internet stations with WiFi on tap and free of charge. A private, romantic fireplace dinner can also be arranged with the camp personnel, and in a modern romantic setting like this, the answer can only be “Yes”.
There are five Superior suites at Kapama Karula, each enjoying their own exquisitely decorated and generous private space. The suites measures 130 square meters and each have inside and outside showers, his and hers basins, bath, full mini bar fridge, coffee station with coffee machine, safe box, air conditioning, overhead fans, telephones, wall mounted international adapter, WiFi connection, iPod docking station, gas fireplace and any other commodity a seasoned traveler deserves. The big glass sliding doors that wraps around the suites, offers the opportunity to have unrestricted views over the Klaserie river and all it’s inhabitants. Each suite has its own outside deck area and private lap pool with comfortable sun loungers.
Two of the Superior suites, measuring 170 square meters are truly breathtaking and purposely build for guests traveling with children. The open plan living room with its own fire place blends perfectly into the master bedroom with en-suite bathroom and all the other standard luxuries of the superior suites included. Each suite is complimented with big glass sliding doors to enable unrestricted views over the river and breathtaking nature outside. Both suites have an outside deck with private lap pool and sun loungers. The second bedroom leads from the main living room with an inter-leading door (or the room can be entered by its own separate entrance). This room is also en-suite and apart from the standard luxuries also includes a Flat screen TV with a Wii game console and a Blue Ray player. These suites offer the ultimate luxury to enjoy with your family on Safari.

5 new luxury suites have been added to the already impressive portfolio of Karula, each suite measuring 85 square meters with inside and outside showers, his and hers basins, bath, full mini bar, coffee station with coffee machine, room safe, air conditioning, overhead fans, telephones, wall mounted international adapter, WiFi connection and iPod docking station. Again the massive glass sliding doors offer breathtaking views over the Klaserie river and surrounds. Guests opting for these lovely suites are welcome to make unrestricted use of the spectacular public areas and all facilities the main areas has to offer.
For a more “authentic” experience within the magnificence that is Karula, guests can also opt for one of two tents with full bush views under traditional canvas. These are more secluded and nestled away from the suites and superior suites in the camp. These two Tents are en-suite with outside shower, his and hers basins, bath, mini bar and fridge, safe box, air conditioning, telephone, WiFi connection and an outside wooden deck. A truly unique “timeless” experience .

HOT AIR BALLOON – APPROX AUD400 PER ADULT
The giant candy-striped balloons lift off at first light and drift at the mercy of the wind for about an hour. The hot air balloon landing can be bumpy, so hold on tight then celebrate with a glass of bubbly. This memorable experience is highly recommended.

ELEPHANT BACK SAFARI – APPROX AUD220 PER ADULT
This is an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity here in Kapama Game Reserve to ride on the back of an African elephant. Meet the herd in the early morning or late afternoon and learn just how to get onto the back of an elephant and move to its rhythm as they walk through the bush. Elephants need to feed for many hours a day, so just because you are on top, this doesn’t stop them from pulling down branches and grabbing a trunk full of grass as they walk. They are the largest creatures in the African jungle so other animals that you may come across will give way to you. After walking for about an hour, the elephants will return you to the elephant boma. A video can be made of your experience for an additional fee.
